- Title
Investment Education in Participant-Directed Plans.
- Authors
Carlsen, Melody A.
- Abstract
The current CENSUS of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists in the U.S. examines the status of, attitudes about, and outlook on investment education in participant-directed plans. In this article, the author notes that while the fervor about retirement savings and particularly participant-directed account plans has escalated with the launching of the U.S. Department of Labor's savings campaign, participant-directed plans are not new or uncommon. Eighty-eight percent of CENSUS respondents are associated with employers sponsoring a participant-directed plan, and seventy-one percent indicate those plans have been established for seven years or longer. Investment education for plan participants is an adjunct to the majority of participant-directed plans, as indicated by seventy-six percent of respondents who say the employer offers some type of investment education program.
