- Abstract
Ria Kapoor's book, "Making Refugees in India," explores the historical development of the refugee category in India and its relationship to governmental and diplomatic responses in the twentieth century. Kapoor argues that the displacement caused by the Partition in South Asia was not adequately addressed by international refugee conventions. The book also examines the long history of internationalism and its conflicts with nationalist ideas of territory and belonging. Kapoor's research draws on UN records and Indian archives to trace the evolution of India's refugee policies and the complexities of its postcolonial nation-state. The book highlights the ongoing legacies of partition and raises questions about refugee policies and right-wing politics in India.
