Septic suture periostitis—A rare manifestation of a common condition.
- Authors
Carmalt, James L.
- Abstract
The article discusses a condition called facial suture periostitis, which is a common condition in horses characterized by the development of a firm swelling in the frontal area of the head. The condition can be cool and non-painful or warm and painful, depending on the stage. Radiographically, it appears as a radiolucent suture line with periosteal reaction and sclerosis. The article also mentions a rare manifestation of this condition called septic suture periostitis, which can occur as a result of sinonasal surgery, trauma, sinus disease, or idiopathically. The presence of sequestrae is a common finding in cases of septic suture periostitis, and their removal is crucial for resolution. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of being prepared for complications when dealing with dental issues in horses.
