- Abstract
2004 Social studies curriculum has offered to new opportunites new citizenship education, suitable for new world order by moving away from passive citzenship approach. Hence general purpose of the social studies is both to bring up active citizen and to acquire life-long skills to students. The ones who discovered social welfare state, claimed active citizenship to get rid of burden from social citizenship when fordist-massive production was replaced by flexible production after the Second World War. The active citizenship depends on which the citizens from all part of the society becomes more participative and meet their needs. In the present days, schools are the places where the active citizenship concept has taught students. Primary schools are more important other schools in constituting consciousness of the citizenship. Because the developmental period in which primary school students are, makes it easier to teach the standards from the curriculum. In addition the student will not perceive that the norms are not constructed without them through the social studies curriculum. Basic vision of the social studies is to bring up Turkish Republic citizens who are participative, know the rights and responsibilities and what to do in case of encountering any situation. In this context, the social studies curriculum aims to actualize aforementioned vision with six social studies skills. Observation, social participation, and empathy contribute to the active citizenship education. Those skills confined to the social studies, are closely related to service applications to society. 19 basic values which the social studies aim to teach, are specifically important in bringing up the active citizens. This study reveals the place of the active citizenship in the social studies curriculum in the light of literature.
