- Abstract
Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by infection with Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria. The characteristic clinical features include gingival tissue inflammation, connective tissue destruction and bone resorption. Among these periodontal pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis is most frequently involved in the etiology of adult periodontitis and rapidly progressive periodontitis. Several investigators have reported increased levels of serum IgG antibodies against P. gingivalis in periodontitis patients.
