- Abstract
The 1861 season of New York Rules base ball began with high expectations based on its gains in popularity in 1860, but was curtailed by the onset of the Civil War. Commemorating its 150th anniversary, "We Hope They Will Not Be Disappointed" describes in detail the effect of the war on the season and recounts the season's highlights, using several contemporary sources as well as recently published research.
