- Abstract
The article discusses U.S. intercollegiate dance competitions centered on a form of the Gujarati dance known as Garba-raas. Particular focus is given to the evolution of this dance form and to its significance to participants' concepts of Gujarati American identity. Details on folk dance competitions organized by the Federation of Gujarati Associations of North America (FOGANA) are presented. It is suggested that the social aesthetic of collegiate Garba-raas draws on concepts of nostalgia and heritage. Other topics include authenticity and the judging of folk dance competitions.
