Writing back in humorous appropriations of English in Brazil.

- Abstract
There has been a growing interest in language practices in which linguistic resources from English are appropriated for symbolic purposes. In the particular case of Brazil, one aspect that seems to have received little discussion thus far is that of English appropriation in mocking, humorous discourses. In the present study, I use text mapping to analyze some of the ways in which English is adopted for mocking, humorous purposes in two types of discourses in Brazil: a) brand naming; and b) a Brazilian humor Instagram page. The analysis of such empirical material shows that in these humorous discourses, traditional understandings of English as a symbol of globalization and modernity are challenged. This is further evidenced by the highly multimodal character of the data and by the appropriation and resignification not only of English but also of other symbols that are supposedly global.
