The English Rogue: Afterlives and Imitations, 1665-1741.
- Authors

- Abstract
The English Rogue (1665) is one of the most reprinted and imitated works of fiction from the late seventeenth century, but it has been largely overlooked in recent studies of early fiction. This article analyses the afterlives of The English Rogue to argue that its success derives from later editors, who adapted it to suit changing tastes in the fiction market. Because of its many imitations, abridgements and adaptations, The English Rogue is a good barometer of trends in fiction in the period many modern scholars have identified as the origins of the modern novel form.
