- Abstract
The article discusses the development of a U.S. national cemeterial system and the establishment of the American Graves Registration Service for war dead during the Civil War. The author reflects on changes to national burial policy brought about by the Spanish American War. Other topics include the transformation of battle sites into national cemeteries, memorialization of soldiers, and the identification of remains.
