- Abstract
Purpose: This study examined textbooks used in Chinese medical and nursing undergraduate education to determine the accuracy and comprehensiveness of breastfeeding information. Methods: Breastfeeding documents released by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund were used as guidelines to develop an evaluation tool listing 30 criteria. Four textbooks (Pediatric Nursing, Obstetric and Gynecological Nursing, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology) published between 2017 and 2018 were selected and reviewed. Using content analysis, three breastfeeding experts reviewed textbook content on breastfeeding for correctness, incorrectness or omission of each criterion, and independently scored textbooks. Microsoft Excel 2019 was used to compute scores. Results: The mean number of 30 criteria present in the four textbooks was 14.5 (range, 12--17). Mean numbers of correct, incorrect and omitted criteria were 14 (range, 10--17), 0.75 (range, 0--2) and 15.25 (range, 13--18) respectively. Pediatric Nursing had the highest score for accurate information and the lowest for omitted information; Pediatrics had the lowest score for accurate information and the highest for omitted information. Conclusion: Breastfeeding information regarding formula risks, support for mothers and breastfeeding problem management was limited and incomplete in the examined texts. Some information was found to be inaccurate or inconsistent.
