- Title
HISTORIC UTE ARCHAEOLOGY: INTERPRETING THE LAST HOUR WICKIUP (5RB3236).
- Abstract
The article presents information on an archaeological investigation of the Last Hour Wickiup site, designated 5RB3236, in Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The small Numic wickiup structures found there are contrasted with the primary residence wickiups that were built to house Ute families. Evidence is presented that these site structures correspond to Ute menstrual huts. This type of simple hut, built by Ute women to stay in during menstruation, is a cultural feature that is not shared by other groups in the region. The existence of such huts can therefore be seen as an indicator of occupation by Numic speaking people.
