- Title
Two English portraits by Liotard: Lady Anne Somerset and Catherine, Lady Hawke.
- Authors
Jeffares, Neil
- Abstract
The article looks at 18th-century Swiss-French painter Jean-Étienne Liotard, focusing on two pastel portraits which he drew during a lengthy stay in Great Britain in 1753-1755, one of Lady Anne Somerset, later the Countess of Northampton, and one of Lady Hawke, born Catharine Brooke. Topics include the lives of the two women, the provenance of the works, and the author's reasons for attributing the second work to Liotard despite its earlier attribution to English painter John Russell.
