- Title
Epigraphical Rabbis: A Reconsideration.
- Abstract
The article interprets the Greek and Hebrew inscriptions at the Bet Shearim and Joppa catacombs in Palestine that name individuals with the title of rabbi, known as epigraphical rabbis in the seminal paper "Epigraphical Rabbis," by Shayne Cohen. The author focuses on how to relate the identity of these epigraphical rabbis with the rabbis known from literary texts by detailing the issues concerning chronology, distribution, and the evidence for rabbinization in and outside of Palestine.
