- Title
Oncojetal antigens.
- Abstract
The article presents information on the research history related to existence of embryo-specific substances in cancer tissue. In 1932, researchers pointed out the considerable morphological similarities between normal embryonic tissue and cancer tissue. However, it was the discovery of alphafetoprotein in chemically induced hepatomas in mice by that refocused attention on these proteins. Since then several oncofetal antigens have been described. The International Research Group for Carcinoembryonic Proteins has provided major contributions in international cooperation and exchange of ideas within the field.
