- Abstract
1. Hepatic ducts were experimentally ligated in the left lateral lobe of the livers of dogs to evaluate postoperative changes in the ligated and non-ligated lobes. 2. During the subsequent 80 to 120 postoperative days clinical liver function tests suggested the picture of partial biliary obstruction as seen in humans. The histopathology of the affected lobes resembled that of biliary cirrhosis in humans. 3. Because of the differences in the anatomy of the biliary tree of the dog and the human and differences in response to liver function tests, hepatic function cannot be evaluated by simple application of human clinical standards to dogs.
