- Abstract
The article examines the variation in the abundance of the South American sea lion Otaria flavescens in Chañaral Island breeding colony by sex, age-class, and reproductive seasonality from January 2007 to March 2008. The results showed that the number of sea lions on land was highest during the breeding season due to the increase in abundance of adult females during the period. However, no seasonal variation in the number of adult males, subadult males, and juveniles was seen. The researchers conclude that the variation in the abundance and sex/age class composition of sea lions at the colony is influenced by reproductive activity.
