The article discusses the challenges in using genetically encoded near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent proteins (FPs) for optical imaging of live cells and tissues. The significance of combining excitation and emission filters in the optimization of imaging systems using NIR FPs is highlighted. Issues addressed by Xiaokun Shu of the University of California in San Francisco are outlined.
