- Abstract
Introduction: The eruption of the primary tooth in children is known as "teething." Teething period varies, it usually begins at around 3 months and continues up to 24-36 months of age. It is associated with local symptoms such as gum irritation and a desire to bite. Systemic signs and symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, sleep disturbances, irritability, drooling, running nose, and decreased food intake during this period are some common symptoms described by parents. Various over-the-counter pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods have been used by parents to soothe children during this period. Objective: To determine parental knowledge on teething, common symptoms attributed to teething, and the common methods used by parents/guardians of different socioeconomic status to provide relief for teething. Methodology: A self-designed, validated questionnaire comprising 26 questions was used. The questionnaire comprised sociodemographic details, knowledge and experience of teething symptoms, practices used to relieve it and overall attitude towards infant oral health. Study Design: One hundred and fifty children aged 3-36 months who had at least one erupting tooth were included in the study. Parents were asked to complete a short questionnaire. Results: The results revealed the most frequent clinical manifestations are chewing on hard items and fever, mostly during the eruption of primary incisors. Parents most commonly use teething rings and have a positive attitude toward their infant oral care. Conclusion: An association is seen between general manifestations like chewing on items, fever, drooling and primary teeth eruption. Parents who had two or three children had better knowledge of infant teething than others.
