- Abstract
The article offers information on Xiao Xiannian, a virtuoso of the Chinese hammered dulcimer called as yangqin. It states that Xiannian, was born in 1962 in Fuxin, China, has taught himself to play several Western and Chinese musical instruments including erbu or two-string fiddle, dizi or transverse flute, and qin qin or four-string banjo-like flute. It mentions that Xiannan has entered the Shenyang Conservatory at age twenty one and studied under Zhang Xuesheng, who was part of the first generation of conservatory faculty that specialize in the yangqin. Furthermore, Xiannian's experience of joining the 2007 Spring Dulcimer week of the faculty of the Augusta Heritage Center which was held in Elkins, West Virginia to enter into musical exchanges across genres is discussed.
