A reprint of Len Wallace's article "The Accordion--The People's Instrument," which appeared in the 1988 and 1999 issues of "Broadside, the National Topical Song Magazine," is presented. The article traces the history of the accordion as a popular instrument of the working people, from its beginnings in Europe until its arrival in North America. Its decline in popularity is attributed to social class and ethnicity issues as well as the prominence of radio and television.
