- Title

- Abstract
The article examines the forces that shaped both the collection and use of geographical data for hydropower projects in the Rufiji Basin in Tanzania. In the process, the colonial engineers attempted to understand the region's ecology prior to the implementation of large-scale irrigation and hydropower projects. The priorities of development institutions and the Tanzanian government led to the dismissal in favor of the later studies of international development consultants formulated outside the region. Thus, the history of development in the Rufiji Basin contributes to the understanding of the relationship between knowledge production and development in Africa.
