A Sublime Invasion: Meyerbeer, Balzac, and the Opera Machine.
- Authors
Dolan, Emily I.; Tresch, John
- Abstract
The article discusses the concepts of materialism and machine in the 1831 opera "Robert le Diable," by Giacomo Meyerbeer, and the discussion of the opera in the 1837 short story "Gambara," by Honoré de Balzac. The author discusses machines used by Meyerbeer to produce effects in his music and suggests that the opera and short story show aspects of the Parisian grand opera. Other topics include criticism of Meyerbeer, the composer Richard Wagner's use of machinery, and debates about Italian versus German music in "Gambara."
