- Abstract
Backround: Adolescence is a special period in which healthy hygiene behaviors can be gained through peer education. Objectives: This research was conducted to examine effectiveness of hygiene education given to a group of adolescent girls with peer education model. Methods: It was in pretest-posttest quasi-experimental type in single group; with 38 adolescent girls who were educated in a girls’ dormitory between March-June 2020. In pre-test application, first part of questionnaire questioning descriptive features and the second part of personal hygiene habits was applied to the participants. After pre-tests, training program was applied to adolescent girls by peer educators. Three months after post-test was applied using second part of data collection form. Data evaluated with discriptive statistics and McNemar test. Results: Mean age of girls was 16.47±1.43; 89.5% of them at high school education level and 81.6% of them had not received personal hygiene training before. When habits of the girls beforeafter education were examined, frequency of hand washing, tooth brushing and bathing, bathing and nail clipping in the menstrual period, frequency of changing, colour preferences and ironing underwear, cutting of toenails, removing unwanted hair in the armpits and groin areas (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that hygiene habits of the girls changed positively with peer education. It is impotant to repeat similar studies in large samples and using control group.
