- Title
SELF-GOVERNING CODIFICATIONS OF ENGLISH CRIMINAL LAW AND EMPIRE: THE QUEENSLAND AND CANADIAN EXAMPLES.
- Authors
Wright, Barry
- Abstract
The article attempts to situate the 1899 Queensland Criminal Code within the broader legal, political and constitutional currents of 19th century efforts to codify English criminal law. It is noted that the Queensland Criminal Code is mistakenly considered as a unique product of Australian politician Samuel Griffith's genius. The article also describes the prospects of codification in British colonial settings. It also investigates the quasi constitutional conceptualization of criminal law that was prevalent in Canada.
