- Abstract
Acute otitis media (AOM) is one of the most common diseases found in the pediatric population. This disease is characterized by protrusion or bulging of the tympanic membrane which occurs together with otalgia and non-specific symptoms such as fever, irritability and malaise. Risk factors for this disease are related to young age, genetics, a history of recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, immune system disorders and facial anatomical abnormalities that affect the function of the eustachian tube. AOM needs appropriate treatment to prevent future complications such as speech and language disorders in children due to decreased hearing function caused by this disease. This literature review aims to discuss the current diagnosis and management of acute otitis media.
