- Authors
Starbuck, William H.
- Abstract
The article presents the observations of the New York law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz (Wachtell), which specializes in mergers and acquisitions and can claim to be a knowledge-intensive firm in this regard. The author seeks to understand Wachtell's distinctive expertise. The article addresses researcher bias, studies of averages, high revenue/high profit law firms, and how Wachtell works. The article details Wachtell's beginnings, transactional practice, case selection and innovation, their strategy in mergers and acquisitions, selective hiring and generous compensation of quality candidates, and its business practices. The author attributes Wachtell's success to a combination of complexity and peculiarity.
