An essay concerning the importance of contextual analysis between special and cosmopolitan duties is presented. It argues that the instrumental defense of relationships treats the duties to which they give rise merely as instrumental to the achievement of the requirements of an impartial principle. The author suggests that failure to acknowledge the fact that associations create both duties and entitlements leaves cosmopolitan theorists without theoretical resources.
