- Abstract
Cancer is a health public problem of first magnitude, because the increasing of population, the aging and health habits, becoming the second death cause. 18 million of cancer diagnoses are estimated per year, attached to the increase of the survivorship, is creating a new field of healthcare demand. Side effects from antineoplastic treatments have a global impact in patients' health and wellness, with a crucial effect in Body Image (BI). BI is a construct formed by beliefs and feelings, which are related with value and body perception. To know and treat the effects of antineoplastic treatment in BI is one of the most recent and biggest challenges for Nursing. That's the reason an intervention program for was developed in UGCI Oncología Médica in Málaga. It was managed through Asamma (Asociación de mujeres operadas de Cáncer de Mama) with the participation of qualified specialists in oncoesthetics and oncology hairdressing, creating educative sessions, coordinated by the advanced practice nurse. The evaluation of the measurement variables after the intervention of the sessions was carried out one month after these sessions. A sample of 81 patients was obtained, where was observed alterations in the perception of the body image. However, the sample was not enough (81 obtained of 129 expected), the preliminary results has given a new perspective on this area and challenge us to continue working in more studies related with this field, being the group therapy used a good intervention for its improvement.
