- Abstract
In the Palo Blanco archaeological site (Berisso, Buenos Aires province, Argentina) from the late Holocene period, human remains were found in the context of primary burial accompanied with grave goods among which five bone tubes stand out. In this work, these materials are analyzed and compared mainly with archaeological and ethnographic records of the country. For the description and characterization of the pieces, they were determined anatomically and taxonomically, and its morphological, physical, and metric structure were also analyzed. Most of the tubes analyzed resembles in shape and the presence of a rectangular hole to the whistles described by ethnographic studies as the "Mataco whistle" type. However, they differ from other records (archaeological and ethnographic) in the support taxon used, in this case being a medium-sized mammal instead of a bird. To highlight, Palo Blanco's whistles represent the southernmost and easternmost extension of this type of piece. Taking into consideration the documentary records, we can confirm that they are part of an instrumental equipment of high symbolic value within the social group and that they denote a certain differential position of the buried individual.
