- Abstract
Gastroenteritis (GE) is most common in children, with rotavirus accounting for 40% of GE hospitalisations in Singapore among those under the age of 5. Gastroenteritis often causes discomforts such as nausea, vomiting and gastric pain and these symptoms could result in severe dehydration and metabolic imbalances, especially in children, if not well-managed. This paper aims to demonstrate the application of Neuman's System Model for the management of a patient with recurrent GE episodes complicated by a background of Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Neuman's model's emphasison primary, secondary and tertiary prevention has relevance for nursing practice as it provides clinician with a holistic and structured approach to help patients with chronic conditions to maintain their state of wellness and reduce the likelihood for future illness reoccurrences.
