- Abstract
The " I maré morta i " (dead tide) (Bezerra I et al. i [10]) corresponds to quadrature tides, which occur when the sun, moon, and Earth form a right angle generating a lower gravitational pull resulting in the least difference between high and low tides (Garrison [20]; Schmidt I et al. i [50]). All of those interviewed collected shellfish for commercial purposes and made collection trips between two to five times per week according to the tides " I maré grande i " (the syzygy tide) and " I maré morta i " (the quadrature tide). When considering tide, higher means occurred during the quadrature tide for the I jereré i technique and during the syzygy tide for the manual technique (Table 2). In addition, the syzygy tides favored greater productivity since they allowed the fishermen to collect for a longer period of time, thus increasing shellfish capture and, consequently, profitability, which may explain collectors' preference for syzygy tides.
