The authors focus on the outstanding contributions of East Malling Research Station in the fruit industry. They say that crown gall disease of rootstocks is featured in the early paper and oomycete pathogen Phytophthora cactorum has been determined as one of the major problems in apple rootstocks based on the detailed work undertaken to understand the disease resistance in rootstocks. They add that chemical control has been the focused of the early pest research at East Malling.
