- Abstract
Introduction and objective: This study aimed to verify the relationship between body composition and VO2 max in women who practice street running. Materials and Methods: observational and cross-sectional study that evaluated 20 women, street joggers. A questionnaire was used with sociodemographic questions and on the practice of street running; electrical bioimpedance, and the "come and go" test. The data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk, "U" Mann-Whitney and Spearman correlation tests (p<0.05). Results: there was a significant difference between the groups only in the maximum VO2 (p=0.002), showing that women up to 50 years old had a higher VO2 maximum than women over 50 years old. No significant difference was found in body composition and maximum VO2 of women who practice street running as a function of time of practice. There was a significant (p<0.05), negative and moderate correlation of maximum VO2 with age (r=-0.67), fat mass (r = -0.50) and fat percentage (r=-0,53), while age was also positively associated with BMI (r=0.45). In addition, significant (p<0.05) and positive correlations were found between body composition variables. Conclusion: It is concluded that younger women runners have better VO2 max than older women. It seems that running time is not an intervening factor in body composition and VO2 max. Age is related to the higher body mass index, the percentage of fat and the lower the VO2 max.
