- Abstract
Background: Canes, crutches and walking frames are commonly used to assist with problems of pain, weakness, musculoskeletal abnormality or balance. Our aim was to review evidence of frequency and effects of walking aids use in people with physical disabilities. Methods: Research and review articles were identified by searching the PubMed and PEDro databases and the references of the included articles. Results: 22 articles were included. The most investigated effects are those of the use of cane and rollator. The majority of research is performed with patients after stroke and with knee osteoarthritis, which is reasonable because they are the most frequent users of walking aids. Walking aids may increase or temporarily decrease walking distance. They also often decrease walking speed. It seems that the effects of walking aids depend of balance, symmetry and patient's need for their use in daily activities. Use of cane on the contralateral side in patients with knee osteoarthritis decreases pain. Conclusions: Walking aids may have positive or negative effects on walking ability. To select an appropriate walking aid, combination with objective walking tests is recommended. It is necessary to investigate association of their use with increased risk of falling.
