The article presents a study which investigates the relationship of root decomposition and root traits of graminoid species and describes the patterns of trait variation across the distal root tips of 96 subtropical and tropical tree species in southern China. The complicated branching architecture of fine plant roots is mentioned. Also discussed is the evolution of root function and form.
