- Abstract
This article considers Paul Delaroche's artistic production in the 1820s in the light of his proven contacts with the English artistic milieu over that period. It uses previously unpublished drawings, oil sketches and print sources to build up a strong case for Delaroche's immersion in the recently established tradition of English history painting, and suggests many points of comparison with the works and professed opinions of Reynolds' former student, James Northcote, French critics charged Delaroche with plagiarism because of his use of English print sources, and even favourable biographers played down this aspect of his early career. Yet Delaroche's remarkable international fame as a painter of 'Historical Genre' owed much to his study of English practices. His immense popularity in Britain in the 1830s and 1840s can be partly attributed to this fact, although his success in France and elsewhere in Europe demonstrates a unique and original capacity to appeal to the 'historical-mindedness' of the Romantic period.
