- Abstract
The chemical treatment has proven effective in eradicating or at least reducing, the fungi present in the seeds. However, this treatment may not affect seed quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological and sanitary quality of watermelon seeds, hybrid Daytona treated with thiabendazole fungicide. 15 treatments were evaluated, according to the factorial 3 x 5 (3 batches of seeds x 5 doses of thiabendazole: 0.0, 0.12, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4% of active ingredient), the design completely randomized. The commercial product Tecto® SC (485 g thiabendazole L-1) was used. It was evaluated in the seed laboratory, germination, first count of germination test and seed health (“blotter test”). Means were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. Regardless of the dose, thiabendazole fungicide did not affect the overall germination and strength. As the health analysis, some fungi were detected: Alternaria sp., Aspergillus spp., Cladosporium sp., Curvularia spp., Didymella bryoniae, Fusarium spp. And Penicillium spp., and, in general, there was a reduction in fungi incidence with increasing dose of thiabendazole.
