- Abstract
The book "Cologne in the Early Middle Ages 400-1100. The Emergence of a Holy City" by Karl Ubl discusses the development of the city of Cologne between Late Antiquity and the High Middle Ages. The author covers a long period in which political changes, changes in urban topography, and in economic life took place. The presentation is based on archaeological research results and also sheds light on the history of other cities that experienced a similar development. Special attention is given to the development of Cologne as a "Holy City," with the construction of the Old Cathedral and the minting of coins with the designation "holy" playing an important role. The role of the archbishops in the city and the uprising of Cologne merchants against the archbishop in 1074 are also discussed. The book provides a comprehensive portrayal of the history of Cologne during this time and demonstrates how to deal with the methodological challenges of a time with few sources.
