- Abstract
The present study by Caroline Callard, titled "Spectralities in the Renaissance, Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries," examines the phenomena of ghosts and specters in the 16th and 17th centuries. The study primarily focuses on cases in France, with some excursions to Italy, Spain, and the Jesuit-missioned colonies. The author analyzes various aspects of these phenomena, including their reception, the influence of natural philosophy, their connection to wars and experiences of violence, the role of ghosts in the family, their significance as border-crossers between the here and the hereafter, and the strategies of the Roman Catholic Church in dealing with ghost reports. The study offers numerous approaches for future work on this topic.
