- Abstract
In the book "That Tyrant, Persuasion. How Rhetoric Shaped the Roman World" by J. E. Lendon, the thesis is put forward that the intensive rhetorical education of the Greek and Roman upper class in the imperial era not only had an impact on speeches and texts, but also on the thinking and actions of the graduates. The author places this thesis in the context of the elaborate education system of rhetoric, which aimed to profoundly shape the language, thinking, and worldview of the graduates. The author provides argumentative evidence for this thesis through three case studies that cover various areas of rhetorical theory and social practice. The book demonstrates how deeply the influence of rhetorical education affected real life in antiquity.
