- Title
The «Orders of the Day» and the representation of the military by the High Command of the Brazilian Armed Forces.
- Abstract
The paper discusses the political education of the Brazilian military by means of the «Orders of the Day» for the years 1979 to 1985. The Orders of the Day are speeches elaborated by Ministers of the Military Branches that are read, on solemn civil and commemorative dates, to troops in formation in the barracks of the Armed Forces. The narrative focuses on the Army, during the years ’70-’80, when the War College and the Doctrine of National Security greatly influenced education in the Military Academies. Drawing upon the ideas of Chartier’s concept of “collective representation” this study explores the constituent elements of the Representation of the Military in the Orders of the Day, as crafted by the Brazilian High Command.
