- Abstract
Introduction: Traditional medicine (TM) is known as "complementary and alternative medicine" (CAM) in some countries. The World Health Organization defines TM as "the knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different cultures, used in the maintenance of health and in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement, or treatment of physical and mental illness." Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and perception of the usage of alternative medicine among dentists in general dental practice. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted among 150 dental practitioners in South India with the help of a questionnaire consisting of 10 questions and the knowledge and perception of the usage of alternative medicine among dental practitioners were analyzed. An appropriate statistical analysis was conducted and the results were obtained. Results: About 87% of the dentists were aware of CAM. About 56% of the dentists were aware through internet, 14% through friends and family, 17% through books, and 14% through journals. Conclusion: This study shows that though dentists are aware of CAM, the usage of CAM modalities in general dental practice is comparatively less. Perhaps, most stress should be placed on the usage of alternative medicine in dental practice and more studies in this direction may help in providing better care to the patients.
