- Abstract
Aim: This study aims to study the efficacy of the crude ethanolic extracts of Vitex negundo against U-937 cell line. Materials and Methods: The ethanolic extracts of V. negundo were prepared using Soxhlet apparatus. The anticancer activity of V. negundo leaf extract on proliferation of U-937 cancer cell line was determined by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide microculture tetrazolium viability assay. The cancer cells were exposed to different concentrations of 7.8, 15.6, 31.2, 62.5, 125, 250, 500, and 1000 μg/ml. Results: As the dose of the test drug increased, death rate of the cell also increased (i.e., at 125, 250, 500, and 1000 μg/ml, the cell viability decreased 62.93, 54.06, 45.87, and 36.94, respectively). The 50% inhibition value of the ethanolic extract of V. negundo was found to be 60.7 μg/mL. Conclusion: In the present study, the active compounds in V. negundo have anticancer activity and shown potential action against U-937 immunological malignant cells.
