- Abstract
Background: Water is the origin of life. 3/4th of the Earth’s surface is covered by water and all living things must have water to survive. Life without water cannot be considered. Humans pollute the environment including the vital natural resource namely water. Raising awareness of the people on this issue is of great importance. At this point, environmental education plays a key role. Aim: This study aims to assess the knowledge and awareness about the effects of water pollution on marine life among college students. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 102 college students in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The questionnaire was prepared to assess the awareness of water pollution and its effects on marine life. It was distributed through an online survey link (surveyplanet.com). Data analysis was done using the SPSS software. Results and Discussion: From the results, it is evident that there is little awareness about the harmful effects of water pollution and the steps taken to control the same. An important purpose of environmental education is to teach understanding about pollution to best protect the environment. A meaningful environmental education needs to include education about, in/through, and for the environment. The focus is to help the learners develop knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes toward the environment. Conclusion: Education activities that get people informed and empowered to help protect water should be encouraged and invested in. Environmental education enhances critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective decisionmaking skills. Awareness-raising activities are of great importance for people before they contaminate water sources. These activities can be accomplished through environmental education.
