- Abstract
Thanks to better understanding of the aetiology of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia, effective treatment modalities, other than surgery are now available. These include a wait and watch policy and drugs. Two classes of drugs-alpha 1 blockers and 5 alpha reductase inhibitors are being extensively used as first line of treatment in majority of the patients. Their mutual combination which is considered better than either class of drugs alone is also widely used. These drugs can also be used in combination with antimuscarinic agents in paients who have additional symptoms of overactive bladder.
