- Abstract
Safawism, which was originally a sufi school within Ahli sunnah, in time changed its line of thinking and converted to Shi'ism. So much so that, its earliest representatives worked their ways from the sheikhs of Sufi order up to the shahs of the state and played a crucial role in the government of Iran. Aziz Mahmud Hudayi was one of the Ottoman Sufis who knew the Safawids well and expressed his opinions about them. Hüdayi who was among the Ahli Sunnah Sufis of his time, was a sheikh of Jalwatiyya order. Moreover, he had close relationship with Ottoman sultans. There were Safawids within the chain of his Sufi order. In this respect, Hudayi can be regarded as a good example of the Ottoman Sufis' approach towards the Safawids. During the long fights and battles between the Ottoman Empire and the Safawids, Aziz Mahmud Hudayi conveyed some of his opinions about the Safawids to the sultans of Ottoman Empire. In this article, Hüdayi's opinions about Safawids are studied under the light of historical information.
