- Abstract
The article examines the relationship between digital game worlds, characters, and deviance in single-player games. Post-apocalyptic and criminal settings are examined as manifestations of deviant game worlds. The analysis focuses on the characters as a combination of narrative character and ludic game character. It is argued that deviant game worlds oppose a conformist way of life with deviant characters and behaviors. The article also deals with the topic of conformity and play, and examines the connection between deviance and play in digital games. It is noted that certain game worlds have a special suitability for negotiating deviance and conformity. The games Death Stranding, BotW, Horizon, and The Last of Us 2 are analyzed and their portrayal of dystopian game worlds is described. Games like GTA V and RDR2, set in criminal milieus, depict societal outsiders rebelling against the system. The article also analyzes the relationship between dystopia and utopia in digital games and finds that deviant game worlds often serve to support conformity. Future analyses could focus on the players' possibilities for action and further examine the relationship between deviance and conformity.
