- Title
Redefining Religion: Uzbek Atheist Propaganda in Gorbachev-Era Uzbekistan.
- Authors
Kendzior, Sarah
- Abstract
The article presents Uzbek atheist propaganda. The group attempted to have power over indefinite language of spiritual faith, simply to discover themselves faced by the swiftly shifting religious and political traditions of the glasnost period. The Soviets had thrived in restraining religion in Uzbekistan by shutting down mosques and madrasas, prohibiting sacred texts and languages and outlawing non-state-sanctioned religious leaders and congregations by the late 1980s.
