- Abstract
Urbanization has been considered as a remarkable research field by the social scientists due to its influence on social life. In Turkey, several researches have been conducted on urbanization from pre-Republican period to the present as well. A considerable part of these research has been on the gecekondu (squatter). The problem of household emerging because of migrations after 1950s in Turkey has caused the gecekondu phenomenon and started a change especially within the major cities. The gecekondu arising as cheap and quick house construction have been regarded as a way of solution for those who migrated from rural to urban areas and their number have swiftly increased in the cities where the industrialization emerged. The emergence and rise of the gecekondus have become an investigation area for many sciences, notably for social sciences. It has been searched for what the gecekondus are and why they are constructed; who are residents, villagers or town-dwellers; how are their family structure and how can gecekondu problem be dealt with. This study focuses on the sociological studies on gecekondu since 1950s. It includes significant gecekondu studies in the literature from 1950 to 2000 and refers to the common characteristics of them. Their contents and general conclusions have been discussed. Also, this research looks for an answer about whether the gecekondu researches may vary based on periodical patterns or different point of views; whether the present issues may differ or not, if it does, what factors influence the difference.
